HOW TO PLAY A ROYAL FLUSH IN POKER

A royal flush is the Holy Grail of poker, the best hand in the game and the rarest. According to Google, your odds of getting one are 1 in 2,598,960. Comparatively, the odds of getting struck by lightning are around 1 in 500,000, so in theory, you have a better chance of being lit up like the 4th of July from the sky than seeing a coveted royal flush. Realistically, you will probably never get one, but in the unlikely event you do, here are five quick tips for playing a royal flush.

1. MAXIMIZE YOUR PROFITS

You can't lose if you have a royal flush; your only concern should be extracting as much profit from the other players as possible. Slow play if your opponents are betting aggressively, only call their bets until the turn, then double their bet, and push them all in if necessary. In the event nobody is betting big, try to up the stakes, make a small bet, only a few chips more than the previous wager. There is no sure-fire way to know the best course of action; the only thing you have to be careful about is betting too aggressively and making everyone fold; other than that, have fun.

2. IF YOU GOT ‘EM, SHOW ‘EM

Unfortunately, your big moment of getting a royal flush could be ruined by everyone folding; it's frustrating but entirely possible. In that event, provided there are no house rules at the casino about showing your cards after a hand is done, make sure to reveal your royal flush to the rest of the table. It's the rarest hand in poker, and it's highly likely nobody else at the table has gotten one, let alone seen one before. It's not compulsory, if everyone folds before the showdown, you are well within your rights to muck the cards, but considering how special the hand is, it's worth showing off.

3. DON'T GET OVERLY EXCITED AND DO SOMETHING STUPID

Getting a royal flush is an exciting moment, but it's very important you still adhere to all the standard rules of poker. Don't discuss the hand in progress, bet out of turn, act out of turn or otherwise impede the game. Aside from potentially losing chips or other sanctions, the casino might void your hand, and that's the last thing you want. Take a breath and play the hand like you would any other.

4. CHECK FOR BONUSES

Many casinos have extra bonuses or rewards for winning a hand with a royal flush, ranging from large cash prizes to your photo on a "Wall of Fame". It's worth asking an employee, the dealer, or checking a casino’s website to see if they offer anything extra for getting a royal flush.

5. ENJOY THE MOMENT

Realistically, you will never get another royal flush. Enjoy the moment and revel in the joy of knowing, for a fact, that for the first, and possibly only time, it's impossible for you to lose a hand of poker.
